Writer's Block: Twilight becomes you

Have you seen New Moon? If so, how do you think it compared to the book? Was it better or worse than Twilight? Please, no spoilers!

View 1117 Answers

The New Moon is the name of an operetta with music by Sigmund Romberg and book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, Frank Mandel, and Laurence Schwab. The show was the third and last in a string of Broadway hits for Romberg (after The Desert Song (1924) and The Student Prince (1925). It spawned a number of revivals and film versions and is still played by light opera companies.

Writer's Block: The right fight

What is your proudest life accomplishment so far and why?

In 1977 after twelve years as a medic, a nurse’s aide, and an LPTN, I passed state boards and received my pin as a Registered Nurse. I then spent the next 25 years in practice. Hugely satisfying and rewarding. I would not have lived my life any other way.

Writer's Block: The play's the thing

What scene from a movie, book, or play would you most want to recreate in real life? Who would you play? Who would you cast in the other roles?

There is really only one conceivable choice. I would have to be Elwood P. Dowd. And you who are reading these words, why – you can be Harvey. I think that Elwood has the best line in all of literature. “Well I’ve wrestled with reality for 35 years, Doctor, and I’m happy to state I finally won out over it.

Writer's Block: Book review

What (if any) books would you ban from a high school library? Are there certain subjects that you feel are inappropriate for teenagers regardless of literary merit?

View 1380 Answers

There is no book that I can call to mind that is worthy of being banned from any library. If a teenager reads a book and wants to discuss it then it is a good thing. If the subject makes the teacher uncomfortable then we have a problem with a teacher not with a book. Information that is in the open subject to comment and rebuttal is far less dangerous that which is passed as often incorrect word of mouth.

Writer's Block: Message in a bottle

What three items would you place in a time capsule to help future generations understand you?

In a carefully wrapped, sealed, stabilized and preservative environment I would place a brick, a feather, and the jawbone of a woodchuck. It would be labeled as a tool for the complete understanding of a man of our times. The time capsule would be sealed with as much publicity as possible with the contents keep a mystery. Every effort would be made to emphasis the importance of this object.

I would then rest satisfied knowing that I had provided a cottage industry for a future generation of scholars.

Writer's Block: Raincheck!

If your best friend forgave his or her partner for cheating and lying, would you try to forgive him or her too? Would you find it difficult to spend time with them as a couple?

I have enough problems in this life keeping up with my own sins without judging my friends. If they are getting along that is just wonderful. Beyond that it is really none of my business.

Writer's Block: Chemistry test

Has your idea of the perfect romantic partner changed with age? Do you think we can teach ourselves to desire partners who are better for us or are we constrained by the laws of attraction?

“constrained by the laws of attraction”. I am not going to be able to answer the question because I will be far too busy marveling at that phrase.

Writer's Block: Super-human

If you could choose one super-power, what would it be and why?

I would have to go with Regeneration. The power possessed by the Time Lords that allows a transformation into a new physical form in cases of injury or age. This single power would I believe allow you to overcome any other adversity. I have always believed that planning and work would solve any problem. But to plan and work you have to have health. So Regeneration it is.

Writer's Block: If these walls could talk

Would you rent or buy the home of your dreams if a brutal murder had taken place there? What if you got to live there rent-free? Would you think twice if neighbors warned you that it was haunted?

There have been people on this earth for a long time. There is a very good chance that several brutal murders have taken place close to where you are reading this. If they had all resulted in haunting we would be tripping over ghosts. Any local ghosts are invited to come to my house I would love to see one.

Writer's Block: Just another manic Monday

Do you look forward to returning to work/school on Mondays or do you live for the weekend? What do you enjoy most about weekends? What do you dread most about school and/or work?

View 827 Answers

Since I do not work on a regular schedule or go to school one day is much like another for me. The computer, however, is a different story. I am amazed at the almost complete dearth of adults that one finds one the net on weekends. No matter if it is a social site like this one or if it is returning or sending Email you just do not find as many people on the net during the weekend. With most of the folks I know computers are something that you use at work.

Writer's Block: Opposites attract (sometimes)

In general, do you find yourself more attracted to people with similar or different interests, life experiences, political beliefs, and religious backgrounds? Do you think having some common interests/goals is essential for a successful relationship?

View 552 Answers

I would like to be able to state that I am attracted to people who had widely different interests and beliefs and backgrounds from me. However, in retrospect most of the folks that I have been close to throughout my life have been fairly similar. They may have been of different races or religious groups or political outlooks but they had major occupational or academic similarities with me. It is really kind of difficulty to get to know many individuals who really have wide divergences from oneself.

Writer's Block: Relive in the moment

If you could relive one hour of your life so far, what would you choose and why? Would you do or say anything different? How do you think it would change your life?

View 1008 Answers

I think I will just leave my life alone. If I enjoyed the hour before then it will not be better the second time. If I screwed it up before I would probably screw it up again worse by trying to fix it. I have read too much science fiction where time travel just makes everything worse to bite on this one.

I would take the young Samuel Johnson to 1922 in Baltimore and spend a long evening with Henry Louis Mencken. I suspect that Mencken and I could corrupt Johnson somewhat. With a schooner or two on board I feel that Johnson would loosen up somewhat and a fine night would be had by all. I would then be cowardly enough to return to the relative safety of our time.

Writer's Block: Would you talk to the dead?

Have you ever participated in a seance? If not, would you consider it? What spirit would you summon and what question would you ask them? Do you believe we can get messages from the dead?

View 672 Answers

I have been involved is several séances, Ouija board sessions, Coven meetings and other attempts to contact the other side. I cannot say that I noted anything too remarkable. However, having spent a number of years working in a neurological surgery unit in a large teaching hospital I will tell you that we do not truly have a clue how the brain works. I have seen people continue to perform functions after the portion of their brain that was believed to control that function was gone.

Because of that I would never go so far as to say that “life” after death is not possible. I would, nevertheless, be willing to assert that such phenomena would have to follow natural laws. These would be laws that we do not at this time understand of course. But I do not believe that anything is supernatural. My central believe is that nothing is above the law.
