Writer's Block: The Best

What's the best thing you've seen or done this month?

View other answers

The fourth best thing that I did this month was to re-read Tropic of Cancer by Henry Miller. I had read it first as a young man and missed about half of the references that Miller used and failed to follow much of his story. Reading it again on a totally different level was a delightful experience. I look forward to enjoying the rest of his works for the second time.

Writer's Block: Le Quatorze Juillet

Happy Bastille Day! Today the French celebrate the event that sparked the French revolution. In honor of our Francophone friends, what is your favorite French thing? Bonus points for answers en français.

The first person that springs to mind when I think of France is Marie Curie. Now I do realize that she was born in Warsaw in what was then the Russian Empire and lived there until she was 24. But her education and work was in France and it was as a French citizen that she received her two Nobel Prizes and became the first female professor at the University of Paris.

One of the first books I can remember reading was about Marie Curie and the theory of radioactivity. I am quite aware that both her husband and her daughter and son-in-law were involved in her work but the book I read presented everything as the work of the heroic Madame Curie.

I found her struggle to acquire an education and the persistence with which she pursued her work to be very inspirational and the slim volume had a powerful effect on me as a child. It was the first book I can remember reading that inspired me toward the idea of making an achievement with one’s life.

Writer's Block: Lights Out

All it takes is a blackout to realize how much we rely on electricity. What's your most memorable story from a power outage?

View other answers

The world is not ready (and the statute of limitations has not expired) on the story of that power outage.

Writer's Block: Economizing

If you had to tighten your budget (or already have), what would be the easiest thing to cut?

View other answers

It has been my experience that expenditures made by other family members are almost painless to cut. I always like to start the reduction process there. This is very similar to congress retaining their health care plans while crafting a new one for us. When goring oxen one should always look to distant fields.

Writer's Block: Little White Lies

Do you think it's okay to tell little lies about small things to avoid hurting someone's feelings? Or is there no such thing as a harmless lie?

View other answers

I do not think it is possible to get through a day without telling a few lies. I have heard from two family members this morning.  I assured both of them that I was delighted to hear from them, when in point of fact I was annoyed at being interrupted in my morning routine. But keeping good feelings within the group precludes total honesty on my part.

I make a sharp distention among lies. Social lies and lies of convenience I tend to let go. "I would love to go out with you but I am washing my hair" – I have heard that one a lot – "No your bottom does not look fat"  have said that a lot myself.

However I do not tell lies for gain and have a very low tolerance for those who do.

Writer's Block: Newsworthy

What news source do you use most often?

View other answers

I use my.msm.com for a home page and then look at MYWay news, The Times Wire, Wikipedia homepage, Digg, Slash dot, and Kosmix every day. From there I am liable to link to anywhere. If I read a news story that is interesting I copy a key name or town and Google for the local story if possible. So I tend to get around a lot. I have a short list of blogs that I look at but most of them are local. I used to read clicked on MSNBC until he stopped keeping it. I have not found a good general survey site for the web since they went dormant.

What was the subject title of your first-ever LJ entry?

Submitted By [info]paperxflowerz

Being the old school Geek that I am the subject of my first entry was “Hello World”. I also have the nagging feeling that we have done this one before. There might be some consideration given to tagging the questions to prevent dupes. Just a thought you understand.

If a friend asked you for some new music recommendations, what would you suggest?

I would tell them that if they set very quietly in a dark room for a few hours that the voices would begin to sing.

Writer's Block: Prying Eyes

Have you ever read someone's private writings (journal, diary, email, letters, etc.) without their permission?

View other answers

To the best of my recollection I have never sought out anyone’s private papers to look at. Had change brought them my way I probably would have read them but it just never worked out that way. A lame answer but an honest one.

I was tempted to confess my part in stealing and reading the diaries of J. Edger Hoover but decided to save that story for another time.

Writer's Block: Busting Blocks

It's blockbuster season in movie theaters. What was the last movie you saw?

View other answers

The last movie I saw in a public theater was Silence of the Lambs. The level of public behavior has dropped to such a level that it is impossible to enjoy a film in a public venue. The last movie I saw on DVD was the remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still which was a horrible adaptation of a fair old Science Fiction movie.

I find Netflix to be an excellent deal for the occasional movie watcher. It keeps a film always in the house to watch whenever there is a block of time to view it. And it has no requirements of getting it back to avoid a late charge.  If I did a cost breakdown I am sure I would find that I could obtain films cheaper but the overall convenience make up for it.

Do you think animals have a sense of humor?

Submitted By [info]li_bean

View other answers

Animals have a wonderful sense of humor but sadly their jokes are so esoteric and filled with topical humor as to be way over us poor human’s heads. That is why many years ago the animals had to stop talking to us. It was just too distressing to them to see a bunch of humans setting around scratching their heads saying "I just don’t get that at all". It was not a happy moment for them. They still remember it as the day humans flunked funny.

What is your favorite site for listening to music online?

View other answers

I like the Acme Midnight Music Theft Site myself. Hell, why should I pay for music. Those people who make and produce it and manufacture the equipment have lots of money, I just steal what I want. They have a quality product that is mostly free of virus contamination. I use my mom’s computer so I don’t really care about that anyway. I just want a lot of tunes to impress my buds with.

Come to the dark side with Acme – remember our motto – We Rip and You burn!
